Introduction

Why Is Antarctica Called the White Continent?

The reason is easy to understand when Antarctica is viewed from space: almost the entire continent is covered by snow and ice.

The Antarctic ice sheet is several kilometres thick in places. The British Antarctic Survey notes that the ice can reach approximately 4.8 km in thickness. Antarctica’s ice is so extensive that only a very small fraction of its surface is permanently free of snow and ice.

Modern geographical estimates are more precise than the often-repeated schoolbook statement that “2% of Antarctica is ice-free.” British Antarctic Survey statistics put the ice-free area at roughly 45,616 km², or about 0.33% of the total area when ice shelves and islands are included.

These exposed areas include rocky coasts, mountain peaks, valleys and Antarctic oases.

Antarctica Is Actually the Highest Continent

Antarctica is sometimes mistakenly described as a continent of “average height.” In reality, it has the highest average elevation of all the continents.

The main reason is its gigantic ice sheet. British Antarctic Survey figures give Antarctica a mean elevation of approximately 1,958 metres when ice shelves are included, rising to about 2,194 metres when they are excluded.

This makes Antarctica very different from continents containing enormous low-lying plains.

No. The statement that Antarctica never experiences earthquakes is incorrect.

Antarctica generally experiences fewer tectonic earthquakes than many regions situated along highly active plate boundaries, but earthquakes do occur there.
